While the constant advancement of technology brings massive advantages, the inevitable online threats are detrimental to the children especially the young ones. As such, it is crucial to protect your kid from cyberbullying. Here’s how you can help your little one:
- Have an early conversation. It is encouraged to talk to your child about social media, interactive games and group chats before he/she start accessing the web. Discuss the benefits particularly the drawbacks of technology and the dangers of bullying. Explain to your child the importance of proper communication among his peers and emphasize respect and kindness at all times. More so, reassure him/her that you will support them should they experience cyberbullying.
- Set practical rules. Establish clear cyber rules like setting the number of hours and days when your kid can have online access. Advise him/her not to share their social media passwords with their friends and being cautious with the information that they post on their accounts especially on interacting with strangers who try to befriend them.
- Be engaged in your child’s cyber life. As a parent, it is your responsibility to be involved in your young child’s online world to ensure his safety and security from the cruelty of cyberbullying. Let him/her know that you will have access to their online accounts and tell them to communicate with you if they have confusions and if they feel uncomfortable about something. In doing so, you’ll be able to monitor their online activities and properly address the problem(s).
